Google to release their own tablet?

Is this even necessary? So according to Gizmodo, google is set to release their own tablet, under the Nexus name. Why? They've already got everyone else making tablets and phones for them, and there is just WAY too many of them out there already. Really all of them do the same thing by running android, so their only differences are power, and design, so what happens when someone releases yet another tablet with a little more power, and a sleeker design? Just seems like a waste, but you know the fans will eat it up.
